LSI Logic Introduces New Fibre Channel Controller With Data Integrity Field to Ensure Data Protection

Designed for storage area network (SAN) and storage virtualization applications, the new LSIFC929XL delivers increased data integrity, performance and multiple ALPA

MILPITAS, Calif., March 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Logic Corporation today expanded its family of Fibre Channel controllers with the introduction of its dual-channel LSIFC929XL controller enabled with Fusion- MPT(TM) (Message Passing Technology) architecture. The 2Gb/s LSIFC929XL incorporates Data Integrity Field (DIF) functionality for additional end-to- end data protection. There is a full line of 929XL HBAs available based on this controller (http://lsilogic.com/storage).

"The industry is continuing its move towards more complex and highly integrated heterogeneous SAN solutions. As SAN solutions proliferate the market, end users need to be assured that data integrity will not be jeopardized," said Charlie Kraus, director of the LSI Logic Host Bus Adapter group. "With our new LSIFC929XL controller, users know that their data is protected."

With the new Data Integrity Field (DIF), users gain increased system reliability with an extra level of end-to-end protection by appending the DIF to block level data allowing integrity checks at each node of a system for enhanced data protection and system debug capability. In addition to DIF, the LSIFC929XL can be programmed to respond to multiple Alias Arbitrated Loop Physical Address (ALPA) up to the maximum FC-AL limit of 126. This capability enables targets to intercept packets for another failed controller, or for advanced clustering and virtualization applications. Each Alias address has full capabilities as the primary port.

Featuring a host PCI-X interface, and supporting Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000, Linux, Solaris SPARC(TM) 7 and higher and Novel Netware, the controller delivers industry-leading performance in both initiator and target mode. The LSIFC929XL Fusion-MPT architecture allows compatibility with LSI Logic's complete line of common architecture drivers. This technology provides the benefit of complete binary compatibility of host software across different physical interfaces (such as SCSI, Fibre Channel and Serial Attached SCSI). The result is reduced software development, as well as considerably less integration and certification time, for system designers with a critical need to shorten time to market.

The HBAs built with the 929XL include the LSI7102AX Single Port HBA, LSI7202AX Dual Port and the LSI7402AX Quad Port cards.
